Oktoberfest



From September 19th to Sunday October, 4th, 2015, Munich will hold its official Oktoberfest which originally started in October of 1810. Other facts about this world-renowned celebration include:

  • Oktoberfest originated with Prince Ludwig of Bavaria who wanted to celebrate his marriage to princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen with his people. He held Oktoberfest on October 12, 1810 and invited everyone in Munich!
  • The beer (called Oktoberfestbier) produced for the occasion (by six breweries) contains 6.0% alcohol (Miller Lite is around 4.2%.) and one mug of beer is equal to 8 shots of Schnapps.
  • A mug of beer starts at around $11.00 and is served under 13-14 very large tents.
Cincinnati claims to put on the largest authentic Oktoberfest (Oktoberfest Zinzinnati) in the US, drawing about 500,000 visitors.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and of course, the month of Halloween.

October is also: National Pizza, National Popcorn Poppin', National Pork, National American Cheese and National Sausage Month.

The final week of the month is the only time of year that all four major sports leagues have games scheduled. The NFL is usually in the early-middle of its 16 game schedule, MLB is concluding its World Series, the NBA begins its season and the NHL has been going for about a month.

October's birthstones are the tourmaline and opal and its birth flower is the calendula. Until October 22, Libra is the zodiac sign and from October 23, it's Scorpio.
