Where's a Notary Public when you need one?
Postal Connections stores usually have a Notary Public on staff to notarize your important legal documents during store hours of operation. Officially, a state government appointee, a notary public serves the public as an impartial witness that will verify the identity of the signer on a document. The notarization act requires that the document be signed in person before the notary public. However, there are certain documents such as birth certificates that cannot be notarized and some documents such as loan docs and wills that require specialized training.
It's a good idea to call ahead to make sure your local Postal Connections store provides the notary service you require.
Remember Postal Connections is here to make your life easier!
All Hallows, Anyone?
- The feast of All Hallows, the origins of our Halloween, goes back to the year 835 when Pope Gregory IV officially made the day November 1st. It is said to commemorate the dead in the beginning of the winter season known as a time of dying in nature.
- The word, Halloween, with its Christian origin, dates to around 1745. Halloween actually means hallowed (or holy) evening. Evening, over time, got contracted to "een". It marks the evening before All Hallows Day on November 1st.
- Souling, a custom from England, existed from the medieval period up until the 1930s. On All Hallows eve, groups of Protestant and Catholic soulers, travelling from parish to parish, begged the rich for soul cakes in exchange for praying for the souls of the givers.
- Soul cakes, the first ever "treats" of the trick or treat fame, are a small round cake (You can find recipes for them on the internet). Tradition says each cake eaten frees a soul from Purgatory. It's the inspiration for an 1891 old English begging song adapted into Sting's 2009, more Christmas-season like, version of the tune:
A soul! a soul! a soul-cake!
Please good Missis, a soul-cake!
An apple, a pear, a plum, or a cherry,
Any good thing to make us all merry!
One for Peter, two for Paul
And three for him that made us all.

George Carlin |
"Clothes make a statement, costumes tell a story."

Mason Cooley |
"The jack-o-lantern follows me with tapered, glowing eyes.
His yellow teeth grin evily. His cackle I despise.
But I shall have the final laugh when Halloween is through.
This pumpkin king I'll split in half to make a pie for two.

 |
Richelle E. Goodrich, Slaying Dragons |
"Halloween creatures both friendly and gruesome peered out of the rustling leaves." |
 |
Kevin Purdy |
"But that's what makes it so fun! Life is scary. So why wouldn't we enjoy and make fun of that fear? It's like life is trying to make us fear it, and on this day, we just mock its attempts and say 'no, not today, today I'm not scared of anything you throw at me." |
