History of Father's Day

A woman named Sonora Smart Dodd (left) of Spokane, WA is said to have started Father's Day after being inspired by a sermon she heard on Mother's Day. Because of her efforts, on June 19, 1910, Spokane celebrated Father's Day after Dodd's father, William Jackson Smart, who, as a widower, raised six children on his own. June 19th was his birthday.

In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson proclaimed
Father's Day to be an official national holiday and in 1972 President Richard Nixon signed into permanent law that in the US, Father's Day would be celebrated on the third Sunday in June.



Five Facts about Father's Day


  1. The male seahorse carries the eggs and births baby seahorses, showcasing another quirk of nature, this time in the ocean.
  2. In the US, there are about 70.1 million fathers.
  3. It is estimated there are around 214,000 stay-at-home dads taking care of children while a spouse works outside the home.
  4. Frank and Nancy Sinatra were the only father-daughter combo to rank number one on the Billboard pop music chart in 1967 with the single, Something Stupid.
  5. Father's Day is the fourth-largest card-sending occasion of the year.
