Facts of Summer

Summer, the time of vacations, nice weather in many places, and outdoor frolicking. Below are some facts about this glorious season you may not know:
  • The dog days of summer refer to the dates from July 3rd to August 11th. They are named after Sirius the dog star in the constellation of Canis Major.
  • The first day of summer 2018 is Thursday, June 21st.
  • Ever play with a frisbee? That summer staple was invented in the 1870s as a pie plate. It wasn't until the 1940s that college students began throwing them around and trying to catch them.
  • In 1816, with a volcanic eruption in Indonesia cited as the cause, the northeastern United States experienced snow and cold weather throughout the summer.
  • While the sun shines brightly in the summer, the hot weather doesn't follow until a month or two later. This is because the water on the earth takes a while to heat up causing a six-week gap until the Earth's temperature catches up to the sun.
