Earth Day, April 22nd

The initial Earth Day was organized by Denis Hayes, an environmental advocate and solar power proponent, in 1970. It falls on April 22nd, is globally coordinated by the Earth Day Network and is celebrated in more than 193 countries every year.

Below are five interesting facts about our good, old earth:
  1. While you read this, the earth is careening around the sun at about 67,000 miles per hour!

  2. 70% of the earth's surface is water and most of earth's fresh water is locked up in the Antarctica ice.

  3. The earth consists of 32.1% iron, 30.1% oxygen and 13.9% magnesium. The core is 88% iron.

  4. Beneath the ocean, deep in the Mariana trench, lies the deepest spot on earth at 35,813 feet below sea level.

  5. More than 3,000 spacecrafts currently orbit the Earth.

Arbor Day, April 16th

This holiday, first observed in 1872, encourages everyone to plant and care for trees. Below are some facts about trees you may not know:
  • About 33%, or one third, of America remains covered by forests.

  • The last US forest inventory counted almost 247 billion trees more than one inch in diameter.

  • A tree living in an urban area has an average life expectancy of just eight years.

  • At 369-feet tall and more than 2,000 years old, the tallest tree in American is a Coast Redwood in northern California's Redwood National Park.

  • You can decrease air conditioning needs by 30% and save 20% to 50% in heating energy by properly placing trees around a building.
