Think You're Complaining Too Much?

According to the article, "What it's Like to go Without Complaining For a Month" by Jessica Hullinger, published in fastcompany.com and others, griping comes naturally to us. In fact, research suggests that we complain to each other at a rate of about once a minute! It's one of the easiest ways to unite and even forge friendships.
At its root, complaining is based on the self-defense mechanism of focusing on the negative according to Jon Gordon, author of the No Complaining Rule. We are programmed to be on guard against something that can hurt and kill us.
Unfortunately, for all its uniting characteristics, complaining damages neural connections related to problem solving and other cognitive functions as does listening to the whining. If you want to complain less, below are some tips from the article to get you on track to a less complaining life:
- Define complaining: A complaint touches on how you feel. For example, saying the traffic is bad is an observation, but saying I hate this city because of it is a complaint.
- Track your complaints: Prepare to be surprised. It doesn't take long for them to stack up into the hundreds.
- Turn complaints into solutions: Do something about the complaint even if it's just saying: "Serenity Now!”
- Say something positive: For example, I hate this city but I have a great stereo system in this car to get me through the traffic jams.
- Change have tos into get tos: Instead of saying I have to buy groceries today, say, I get to buy food for my family this evening.
