Why do we need a Leap Day?

February 29th occurs every four years and is called leap day. This day is added to the calendar because the earth's orbit around the sun is not a precise 365 days. Because seasons and astronomical events fail to occur in strict patterns, calendar days drift away from calendar events. So, leap day is a corrective measure to keep the calendar year synchronized with the seasonal year by adjusting for that drift.
The Super Bowl

Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, after the 1966 regular season. Super Bowl 50, which is on February 7th this year is the sole exception to the rule that Super Bowls are designated with Roman numerals. Currently, the National Football Conference (NFC) leads with 26 over the 23 wins for the American Football Conference (AFC).
The record for the most Super Bowl wins goes to the Pittsburgh Steelers with six. Five wins each have gone to the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers and the Green Bay Packers. The New York Giants and New England Patriots each have four Super Bowl championships. Thirteen other NFL franchises won at least one Super Bowl. The Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans have never appeared in a Super Bowl.
Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day (which began in 1887) is the successor of an early Christian holiday called Candlemas Day. It marks the midway point between the winter solstice and the spring vernal equinox.
On Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil, a famous groundhog (aka woodchuck and rodent) emerges from his burrow and looks for his shadow to help determine the weeks remaining in winter. If he sees his shadow because it's sunny, six more weeks of winter remain and he goes back into his hole. If clouds obscure his shadow, he stays above ground because spring is on its way.
